Wow.. This record took
a long time to finally come out. My friend Juha, whom I first met at the Space
and Rock Festival in 1998, when his band, Pseudo Sun played, has spoken about
these recordings for the last 10 years or so. I am so happy they have finally
made it to a CD. It is the original band
except for the drums (Juba-bass, vocals,
synths, mandolin), Mats- Guitars, Erca- Drums) and this was recorded a long
time ago. The band has not played live or existed for at least 12 years
now. Anyway, this is 8 tracks of space
rock! Mind Probe starts off with a bass line and fast pace, almost punky in
nature. The mid section has a long synth
jam before the guitar solo. Mats can still really rip it up. The chorus part of
the vocals really reminds me of Juba’s old band, Darxtar! The New Breed starts with some synthesizers
before the track kicks in. The vocal is
a bit more like spoken words for a lot of the track. The chorus vocal is also
double tracked. The bass line is very much like early Motorhead but the guitar
is a simple rock riff. Not that strong a track but I liked the guitar solo
section a lot. Don’t Repair Me, slows things down with a drone synth, and slow
vocal as the track very slowly grows.
Some very interesting lyrics on a lof the songs. It has a vibe like the
song Zarazina from Chronicles of the Black Sword by Hawkwind. Heliosheath is
instrumental and has an ominous feel and a nice organ line in the background as
the bass and drums build things up. The guitar line has a bit of a mid-eastern
flavour to it. Labyrinth is a bit like Deep Space Riders, the way the groove is
sort of oriented but they lose it after a minute or so and then come back to it
as the synth line takes the lead between the vocal sections. There is a longish
synth and then guitar solo section as well. When the main riff returns the
synth is sort of mellotron like. The Nature of Space Monsters starts with a
heavy bass line before the drums and then guitars kick in. The guitar is making
a lot of feedback for a while as the bass and drums just sort of jam on.. Strange instrumental. City of Dreams features
the mandolin at the beginning of the track and has a very nice melodic guitar
line. This again reminds me of early Darxtar showing Juba going back to his
space rock roots! Lunar Phantasy closes the record and this one rocks hard like
the opening of the record. One of the more psychedelic tracks.
Is this the last Pseudo Sun record?? One never knows now. Hope you
enjoy it. Write to Juha if you are interested in a copy: pseudo_sun (at) hotmail.com
