I have been writing music reviews on and off since 1984. I ran a heavy metal fanzine from 1984-1988 called Metal Madness and have been a staff writer for Aural Innovations for many years. I have also contributed to Chrohinga Well (RIP), Bad Acid (RIP), Lowcut (RIP), Roadburn and a number of other zines as well. I recently moved to Portugal so please request the new address and do not send any music to Denmark anymore. Tak..

The guys got together for some jams on a weekend in Spring 2023 at Buffbergen Studios in Hanove and bam, a new band and album is created! Each jam is one album side long and it starts with the title track, which will remind you of that classic NEU vibe and groove as things get going and then it heads into that heavy guitar psych of Electric Moon,, Speck and others. My favorite track is the side B, Sachebene, which has such an incredible spacey vibe with long delay guitars. I really just got lost in this track.. Fantastic track… In the end Dave, who wrote the promo sheet describes it the best, “the three musicians lose themselves in the spheres of space echo only to land again after 45 minutes”. First off Paul does most of the lead vocals. The opening and title track sets the feel for the rest of the album. Spacey! The main song riff is a synth line. Paul’s voice is a bit like Bob Calvert at times. A sort of mysterious vibe percolates between the more happy main theme. Cool song. Beyond the Spectral Gate is very synth heavy with a simple drum. Lots of layers of atmospheric stuff going on. A nice floating instrumental track. The Illustrated Man starts with a sound sample before the drums, guitar bass and synths take over and the song gets going. Nice opening guitar solo. Santtu also contributes some vocals as well. Another mysterious track. Samsara starts with a steady bass line and off we go on another instrumental space synth track. Nice lead synths. Mind Melt Machine (Blissed out Mix ) is a sort of reprise in a way. Some of the elements of the original opening version are more prominent on this one. A very cool EP. I enjoyed it a lot. Check it out.. CD is limited to 150 copies.

http://astralmagic.bandcamp.com
Scott aka. BERLIN, GERMANY JAN 27TH 2024
Wow.. Hard to believe it has been 8 years since I came to Berlin to see Pothead. It was so great to see the guys and hear them play again. It was a really different set from last time and more on the heavy rock side but also some rare tracks..

We arrived about 20:35 and they were to start at 21. Got a beer, found a good place in front of Brad. Place was about 2/3 full but still some folks outside. I guess in the end it was 3/4 full. Tickets were pretty expensive, 42€. A lot for one 2hr show and no opening band.

Anyway, the mood was great and it was a mix of the old gray guys like me and the younger folks and lots of women dancing!! Sound was perfect!! What a great and more heavy set.. I liked it a lot. The band said they felt the show was a good one as well..

They went thru a lot of their catalog but not songs from Rocket Boy or Chardeire or USA. They let us in the backstage after about 30mins and it was so great to see Jeff!! I had hung out with Brad the day before. We stayed for about 2hrs and went in rounds talking with everyone. Got a picture of me and Brad, my daugher and Brad, Silvana and Brad.. Fun.. I've started this campaign to fund the production and pressing of the third and last Tidsgæst doublealbum. A psych/prog/horror project that i started 10+ years ago.

I'm doing all instruments, vocals (in danish BTW), recording, mixing and mastering myself but the final steps must be done by people who have the equipment and skills. That's the big cost. Also, the funding will cover the shipment of the album so i hopefully end up with a break-even bottonline.

If you find this album interesting you can help me finance the release. You will then get hold of a copy of a LP that will not be easily found outside of Scandinavia. I plan to press about 300 albums, depending of interest. All money goes directly to the release of this vinyl!

About Tidsgæst (Time's Guest or Guest in Time)

This whole project developed from some talks with a former bandmate. We where both interested in old danish folklore about gnomes, elfs, ghosts and haunted places, and we found it remarkable that the storys told by people way back resembled the way people of today describes psychedelic experiences. So we got the idea that we should re-tell these storys using psych as the musical language. I have been a psych/prog musician and fan since way back, and had started to play in this style again after a long time.

I then moved to Sweden which made the project a one-man-band effort. The songs developed more and more and found inspiration in other writings, like weird tales by the 1900's ghost story authors and the 50's-60's Sci-Fi books. First double album came out in 2013 and the sequel in 2017.

Moving around from place to place, jobs and kids slowed down the work on this album a lot, but now i can see the end of it all (no no, not that end). I'm in the mastering process right now, so the tracks are not ready for release for a couple of weeks, but you can listen to some tracks from the first two records in the Soundcloud widget, which are very much in style of the new album.

Hope you find interest in this limited work of a weird explorer, who would make an excellent mad scientist if i didn't had discovered the holy blessings of music first.

Cheers from Sigurd, Afd. O Records

The first records were cool and I will support this one for sure.. The title track is my favorite, a long 18min or so space rock like instrumental journey. Awesome. Aura is a very short 2min synth piece to close the side. Side B starts off wild and crazy with a like free jazz like spirit called Blitz.. Rough Air, starts slowly but the Ingvald, kicks the pace up and off we go!! A very Hawkwind like energy on this one with some intense drive and guitar and some added organ as well. It has a nice spacey come down at the end. Great band that are doing a nice job of providing the world with lots of instrumental mind music to just float away to and get lost. Cool people as well.. Enjoy..

https://kanaanband.bandcamp.com/album/diversions-vol-2-enter-the-astral-plane

Scott aka. It features 7 tracks that sound like LOTU!!! Surprise! Ritual of Inner Light starts things off with a bit of a sitar drone and then the heavy bass line, chimes and follow. Dark, mysterious vibe but then a long ending with guitar solo, flute, etc.. great opening number. Golden Dawn, keeps the vibe mysterious and dark with a organ dominant track and loud drums! Codex Moon keeps the mood about the same but adds some hand drums, percussion as well but mid way thru, there is a nice new change in the keyboard and vibe as we head into the guitar solo section. Procession has a nice more psychedelic mix with effects and nice panning on the guitars. Nice… Life of the Severing starts with a cool wah guitar line that leads the song until the vocals start and returns between the vocal sections. Like the vibe on this one!! Immortal Rites brings back the sitar and that otherworldy Eastern feel including the tabla drums. This track reminded my wife of Marc Bolan. Transfiguration reminds me of another LOTU track, but I can not remember which one. A more heavy brooding sound for sure. Great guitar solo on this track and good way to end the album. It also features the great Vince Cory (Sonic Trip Project) on lead guitars on tracks 1-4. Lauri Kajander is on lead guitar on track 5. Anyway, Shine, which opens the CD is a nice uptempo space rock number with smooth vocals. Liquid Light starts with a lot of spacey synths and a bit of Vince before the very fast buried drums take off with a vocal mixed quite high in the mix. Trippy…. Future Doors is another mid paced synth driven number, a bit more melodic and happy! Planetary Intelligence is really spacey and a bit slower with some cool sounding synths and EWI from Bridget. The title track is an 18:41 track with a lot of different parts. Cool song…. There are 2 bonus tracks as well from the rare lathe 7” that was released earlier this year.. A great release and limited to 100 copies.

http://astralmagic.bandcamp.com

Scott aka. This was really drug fuelled acid blues space rock madness at it´s best…. no one had a sound anything like this in 1972.<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px;">NO ONE!!!<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px;"> <span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-size: 14px;">Some of the interlude pieces are a bit different and the way they space in with Earth Calling into Born to Go each night. Wow.. wish we had some film to go along with that!!! The booklet has all the lyrics and basically everything that was in the original LP as far as art goes. No new pictures that I have not seen before. Anyway, here is a detailed description of the shows.

A bit longer on this night that the other 2 nights. Born to Go is a bit shorter compared to Locano. Down thru the Night, a perfect transition song. Lord of Light is Nik's longest sax solo of the show normally during this song and this version keeps up with that. The Black Corridor has a different start and then the spoken word kicks in. Trippy… Space is Deep.. Cool version and nice vocal ending and then Nik draws it out even more before they space out with Electronic No1. This one is more guitar oriented. Dave is more into it. Time to get punished with the Orgone Accumulator! The first guitar solo is slow to build but then he really plays some cool stuff but not as intense as Locano or London. Dave plays a totally different guitar riff for a minute but no one catches on to take it somewhere new so they go into the main riff again. In the next space out there are some really different sounds (dik Mik, vocal??). This is totally different than on the other nights and 2mins shorter as well! Upside Down, a strange track but only 3 mins. 10 Seconds of Forever has some intense electronic sounds. This leads into BRAINSTORM!

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Intense.. Makes you wonder how Nik does it?? He plays sax solos for half of every song, nearly (except when he plays flute!). Quite the sax stamina! This is the longest version of the 3 at nearly 14mins. Always love 7 by 7.. Time we left this world Today has a different start, a different guitar pedal effect or riff before the real one comes in. The balance of the lead vocal and play back from the backing vocals is so cool and makes the track really different. Killer guitar solo on this track and a long space out that takes the track to over 13mins! Master of the Universe is a powerful and much faster than the original studio version! Very powerful drumming!! This version is about 30 seconds longer than the others. After Welcome to the Future, at this show the encore is You Shouldn´t do That, which in the old day could stretch out to 30mins! But now they keep it more under control and only but they still totally freak out and it is so powerful. Dave is a master on the wah pedal. So intense at times. Lemmy really cuts thru the mix more on this track.

Earth Calling is really cool and then Born to Go is a mindblower. They get totally spaced out in the 5-7mins and what an ending. Phew… Nik has a really long sax solo in Lord of Light compared to normal. The Awakening, as with most of the poetry stuff, the background stuff is so far out and trippy.. Space is Deep is such a spacey track. Electronic one is wild with the voices, awesome mix. Then you get pummelled with Orgone Accumulator! The timing of the Space Ritual is just so perfect. One intense track, a more mellow or spoken word space out and then another high energy track.. After Dave's awesome spaced out wah solo, they try to go back into the main riff but decide to let Nik take a long solo before heading back into the vocals at 5mins.. Brainstorm is super intense and the guitar is heavy and in battle with the sax at times but they get super spaced out but Simon just keeps pounding on and keeps the energy level insane. Did anyone have a more dirty fuzzed out sound as Dave on Masters of the Universe. Wow… Super intense version and guitar. The rhythm section is relentless..

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">London
<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Now the band has had a week off are back in London and Earth Calling is far out but last about 2mins like all the other versions. Born to Go blasts you out into space for 10 mins!! 90 seconds longer than at Sunderland. Very cool how they melt from Down thru the Night into the Awakening. Trippy as always and then blast into Lord of Light.. Simon.. wow.. the guy is incredible. Nik¨s solo is a lot shorter on this version that at Locano. The band seems to be aware they are recording this show, perhaps. The Black Corridor, you can hear Del and Dik Mik very well and what they contribute. Space is Deep (7), indeed! I just love that guitar sound at the end section before the go into the Electronic No 1 (3)!! It is so spacey… True Space rock…. This is really far out and the clarity of the mix, amazing. Who is making that like roaring sound?? Crazy… Again, Dave is just amazing on Orgone. That first solo, the tone of his guitar and how spacey and intense it is. Wow.. The 2nd half is as lose and wandering as in the other versions and ends dead on 10mins.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Brainstorm starts CD 2 and it is super intense and the way the electronics are mixed at times is really killer.. What a super intense song and freakout!! I can hardly imagine there was anything as heavy as this in 1972……… This version is really crazy though.. They seem to be going into the end part and then go into another total jam out section as it seems Nik did not want to stop his solo and then they go in and out of the main guitar riff as NIk just keeps going. Nik starts singing again at 8:50. The riff that Dave plays around 10:10, is the classic Acid King riff.. tone and all!!! The ending on this version is totally different than in Locano. Nearly 12mins long… 7 by 7 (7) is such an awesome floating space journey. What a great mix by Stephen! Sonic Attack… this one is different every night. The electronics are in your face at times. I can not even imagine what people thought if they had never heard Hawkwind before and someone puts this on the turntable in 1973 and cranks it up. What the fuck is this stuff about Sonic Attack??? These guys are really far out. Time we left this world today has such a heavy riff and Dave's first solo is epic!!! They get totally spaced out and no one is sure where to go???? At 5.50 Lemmy has a short solo as they decide to see when to kick into Master of the Universe and it takes them awhile, in what is some of the most improvised stuff on the entire 3 show set! At 8:30 they decide to come back to the main riff. Spaced out until 11.30… Master of the Universe is super fast on this night!! Simon is on speed!!!! He is playing so fast the band is really having a hard time playing the song at this speed!! This version is 7 mins! We get You Shouldn't do That and off we go. A very short version! Dave's solo is totally killer from 3-4 mins. Wow….

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">So which show is the best of the three?? How knows??? I think I like Locano the best. I had really hoped that at least one of the shows would have had a long epic version of Brainstorm or You Shouldn't do that for 20mins or something… I think by this time, their super extended freakout jams were over actually… I really wish they had put the song times on the back of the box for each show so you could have chosen to listen to the longest ones or shortest ones… My guess is most are pretty close to the same times. Dave's first guitar solo is so intense and what a sound on Brainstorm from the Liverpool Stadium show is really awesome but this version is only 13 mins. Interesting ending.

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px; min-height: 16px;">

<p style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue"; font-feature-settings: normal; font-kerning: auto; font-optical-sizing: auto; font-size-adjust: none; font-size: 14px; font-stretch: normal; font-style: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-position: normal; font-variation-settings: normal; line-height: normal; margin: 0px;">Anyway, you can not go wrong if you have the money as the mixes are great and the shows powerful, even though it is more or less the same show 5 times and in 5.1!!!! A bit overkill except for the absolute die hard fan!

This is some really trippy and cool stuff and what is even cooler is the way this music is made. Read his description below:

“I used homegrown reishi mushrooms, connected to my synthesizers to make this tape. The current these mushrooms generate is transformed into signals the synthezisers understand. The melodies generated by this method are then run through effects and manipulated in real time. All these jam sessions are captured in one take, no overdubs. Side A focusses on rhythmic explorations and arpeggiated melodies, where side B is a more meditative and atmospheric journey through the land of drones.

The first recordings from my new studio starting to appear, old projects (Albino Rhino, Black Moon Circle), that has been worked on for some years, finally released to the public. My best solo work, and lots of Doctors of Space and interesting Øresund Space Collective recordings! I am so grateful to all the awesome musicians who have helped to make this happen and all the record labels, especially Sabine and Space Rock Productions.

I also have to give a huge thanks to the graphic artist, David Graham, who created most of the artwork and all the layouts for these releases (except BMC). Also, Hasse Horrigmoe, who I work very closely with on most of these releases. I can not believe I had 16 releases this year, 14 in physical form (cassette, CD, and LP).. This album was recorded in 2022 by the three piece instrumental band and each side features 3 tracks. THe CD starts off with Sounds of Illusion. A nice smooth groove and lots of spaced out effects on the guitar. Max, the bass player handles all the synths (not sure how they do it live) which adds nicely to the psychedelic mix. On the Run really increases the intensity. Really cool the way the synth is mixed in this one and the way it ends. Schattenspiel starts with a synth loop and then the drums and bass join the groove as the guitar spaces out. Nice spacey synth and great long guitar solo on this one.

Side B /track 4) starts with Dead Bodies and features a twangy guitar and a mid to fast pace that really builds in a cool way. Good Mourning is more relaxed and the focus in on the guitar with a synth drone and nice bass notes that cut thru a bit more than on other songs. Heaven Scent ends this trippy cool spacey musical adventure that you can just drift off into another world with.

If you are a fan of Kombyant Robotron, Zone Six and other instrumental trios, you will probably dig this psychedelic kraut trip rock.. Great stuff.. The band has 6 releases on bandcamp, mostly sold out but you can hear the streaming stuff..

http://acidrooster.bandcamp.com
Scott aka. These 9 tracks were recorded between 2021 and 2023 and feature guitarist Anton Barbeau on tracks 3 and 6 and Taavi Heikkilä on saxophone on track 8 but the rest of this album is all Santtu! It opens up with Göbekli Tepe. An instrumental synth driven piece with drums and bass. It has these layered synths that sound really cool at times. Puma Punka has a nice groove and simple guitar line but I really like the vocal delivery. The trademark layers of synths bubbling, spinning and spacing in the background are still there. Nice track. Mystics from Outer Space is more guitar driven with a nice use of the synth to compliment the guitar riff and vocal chorus. The Other World is an instrumental all synth (or nearly) space out… Blow your Mind has this sort of 60s vibe and a lot of organ. Watchers (with Anton) is a happy song with what sounds like a female vocal accompaniment on the chorus. Transmission Omicron is a multilayered synth jam with lots of arpeggios. Phases is a more uptempo with a nice bass line and some saxophone! I dig the guitar line as well, this western feel of sorts. Close Encounter ends this CD in a more mellow and laid back vibe.

If you stripped away all the keyboards, some of this album would remind me of the Bevis Frond!! Santtu has really tried out some new ideas here with success: more rock guitar riffs, multi layered backing vocals, etc.. A bit different than the last few albums for sure. Check it out… the next album will be here soon….

Nice artwork by my friend Eetu as well. Only 100 on CD..

https://astralmagic.bandcamp.com/
Scott aka. Wow… This is 11 tracks for spacey rock music, with Jonathan Segel providing most of the guitars as well as Violin. Jaire (Octopus Syng) plays sitar on All is One and Drone of the Universe. The opening track is a quite melodic and reminds me of some of the more poppy Dark Sun stuff in the vocal parts. All is One is a very cool piece with violin, sitar and a very nice spacey vibe. Great song. Humaniods in the Night is a bit more electronic with the drum rhythm and bass. Really nice guitar lines. The vocoder part is different. Drones of the Universe is an instrumental track with sitar and E-bow guitar parts. Lots of synths.. Three Suns Rising is beautiful track with many layers of synths and sounds. Golden Towers is a mid paced track and sounds like a lot of other AM tracks until the instrumental section. Mission MU is very experimental and features Marc Paskvan on spoken words. He is also featured on Transmission Lamdba (track 10). Nocturnal Visions brings some groove back and some very nice lead synth and guitar work. Going Down slows things down and features a very laid back vocal. Still keeping things spacey!!! The Valiant closes this space and rock music adventure with a more uptempo track but nice melodies as well and nice lyrical story! Release 30.. Wow… Impressive.. Check it out on bandcamp. Last years excellent record was a collaboration with different Swedish, Indian and Egyptian artists. This record features KG on Sitar, Suvrat Apte-Tabla (has played with Zakir Hussain and many others) and Amanda Welch on Swarmandal (Harp like instrument). There are 3 tracks on side A and 2 on side B. This is very traditional Indian classical music and side A (as explained in detail on the back of the album by his teacher) is an afternoon music while side B is an evening raga. The poems are by Alberto Caeiro. Some are more lead by piano than guitar. The opening track features André Jesus on drums. It has been a few years since he has produced another album but this is a cool and relaxed spacey trip, with inspiration from Syd Barrett, Robin Hitchcock and outer space beings. Constant Music starts things off with his laid back stoney vocals, guitar but drifts off into psychedelic never never land. Very cool stuff.. Your My Magic is next with a bit more 60s flavour (the guitar). Drop Out has some funny lyrics. There are a lot of interesting lyrics, some are self biographical, it would seem. Stars above You, is a bit more keyboard oriented and also features some guitar solo parts and is more alike a full band piece. Queen of Blue Shadow is more like the earlier dreamy stuff while Once we were Almost Innocent is like garage rock!! How about your Day Today is a really nice track, a bit of spacey Beatles feel to it. I miss you Valerie features a lot of cool and loud synths to give this track a quite different feel. Gamelan Music with Three Empty Beer Cans and other Household Items is a strange short number before the long closing number, Starlight. Great stuff..His good friend Santtu (Astral Magic) plays synths and some backing vocals. This is a limited edition release. I think only 200 vinyls and digital.

https://octopussyng.bandcamp.com/album/smoke-green-mirror
Scott aka. Dave has been driving the band since the 90s and nice to see him back on bass in this mainly 3 piece line up with Rainer Neeff (ghost guitars) and Gottfried Klier (Sax) as guest musicians on the long Slingshot track, which starts things off and takes all of side A like a rocket taking off…. High energy space rock with a melodic guitar line that really cuts thru the sound and this is followed by Dave playing some synths. Things slow down and there is a sax solo. The track goes thru a lot of transitions and eventually gets back to the heavy space rock and the main theme it started with returns at 17mins until the end.. Side B, the title track is 10mins in length and starts with some dark mysterious sounds, organ, guitar. After a min or so it gets quite hypnotic with its build up and repetitive bass line. It has a dark feel to it (like the times we live in). A very intense piece of music. Chrono Trigger keeps the dark vibe with a cool synth that comes and goes. It stays in the dark heavy realm. Cool stuff, especially the A side.. If you are a fan already you will dig it…

http://zonesix.bandcamp.com

http://sulatron.com
Scott aka. Dave (Hypnos69) picked me up and we chatted about studio stuff and modular synths, etc…. I have a nice place to sleep in the control room of the studio.. The Kanaan guys will also stay here. We had some cold veggy lasagna and then headed over to the festival in time to catch about half of the Belgium stoner rock band, Fire Down Under. They have 2 albums out and new one next month… Pretty much straight up classic stoner rock sound, a bit of Swedish influence… Crowd was really into it and I could meet my old friend Silvana! So nice to see her. She looked great..

I had heard from others that Mojo and the Kitchen Brothers were really good. Such a nice human. It was very cool to hear this songs from some of his solo albums. They are much heavier live for sure. Lost in Space from the Dark LP was so great.. Audience really loved it. He did a nice balance of his keyboard and guitar playing. It was a solid band and people really dug it. They had some sound issues at the start but great in the end.. It was the best band of the day for sure! Good luck Dave…

Day 2

I was totally exhausted when we got back at 130 in the morning. DId not get up until 10. Feel a bit strange still… Going to have to find some new energy for tonight… Event is starting now but I am still too tired.. I will go downstairs soon. Had musli, fruit, banana, bread and cheese. All good… Dave offered to let me use any of his synths so I need to go see what might work for me,.,.. He has the Mono-poly, Poly D, KORG Ms20 and MS50 sequencer, ARP2600, lots of cool stuff.. I played the mono-poly for a while but decided not to borrow it for the gig..

Lots of great bands today. Hypnos 69, Mars Red Sky, Kanaan, Earthless…. The tent was packed and I just do what I do but the people were so wonderful and yelling and into the trip of cosmic music that I presented. It went quite well actually. For those that want more info, here is what I did. I started with some space wind noise on the modular and faded into a 6 different synth loops (arpeggiations) on the Novation Ultranova synth in a different keys. In most songs I would also add some mellotron or some space sounds or solos on the kaossilator pad or the modular and just went with the flow!! I played for about 40mins.. I had so much positive feedback from the Sula Bassana band, Dave and many others. Wow.. made me feel really good. Only sold 1 record after the show.. Thanks to Tom for the pic below.

Earthless was the main act and just killed it of course. I have not followed them for that long but band leader, Paul, gave me this CD at Kozfest and I have to say my wife and I have been spinning it a lot. I quite liked their last ambitious double CD, Countdown to a Cosmic Ego Death. This CD features 12 tracks, a mix of short and long excursions. Here comes the Sun is a shorter one with a repeated lyric, nice laid back spacey vibe and flute playing. Explode like a Star is a classic 80s psych rocker with nice spacey synths (Seaweed and Dave Onley). She tastes of LSD, brings the flute back on this psych rocker that reminds a bit of Vibravoid, the Seeds, etc.. Inside Out (Floating in Space), what a great spaced out track, again with some relaxed flute from Claudia. Later there is a nice long guitar solo section. What a great track. Gravity Pulls starts off very uptempo, then spaces out totally in this great mostly instrumental track.. Gravity Pulls is another uptempo track with nice layers of synths and a bit dreamy, nice space attack bubbles, melodic guitar solo and good drive. She lay down in the long green Grass is a more relaxed track with a strong layer of psychy guitar and synths bubbling wildly in the background. Last Chance Saloon is a slow building longer mid paced track lasting over 6 mins. Temple of Acid Dreams reminds me of a HW tune at the start like from the Hawklords era.. It develops into a fast rocker. Lost on the Wrong Side of Town is very spacey to start with. Love the sound.. Crank it up!!!! The CD ends with Here comes the sun to melt the Night Away. I have to say I enjoy this album a lot more than the new Hawkwind…. Buy it!!

http://deviantamps.com

http://deviantamps.bandcamp.com
Scott aka. Like a lot of artists from the 70s, he had to either try to be more like the crowd (which was very unsuccessful for many 70s artists). Alice did a balance. His teaming up Desmond Child to try to get hits, lead to some really crappy songs but there were a lot of gems on a lot of these 80s albums. I really liked Flush the Fashion and still own the cassette! Dada was also a very interesting record. I finally got to see him live (2x) on the Constrictor tour, including a show in his home town, Phoenix AZ.. It was the same show as we saw in El Paso just a bigger place and worse sound.

Anyway, I really like the approach Chris has taken with this book. Not only does he go thru all the songs one by one from the different albums, he discusses all the changes in the bands and the live sets they played on the tours and mentions key live performances or videos that exist from the different tours. There are nice short interview pieces with members of the bands about the tours, which is a nice addition. There are also quite a few unreleased music pieces from the 80s that still are not available to this day.

If you are an Alice Copper fan and liked his output from the 80s you can not go wrong with this book. YOu will learn a lot and want to go back and listen to those albums again. Highly recommended!!

http://sonicbondpublishing.com
Scott aka. He was renamed Randy California by Jimi Hendrix, when he played in Jimi´s band in 1965 as there was already another Randy in the band. Anyway, there is a brief history of the bands before Spirit to lead into the book and then we are straight into the first album in 1968. Each chapter has a bit of introduction to the era before heading into the tracks. There is a lot of information in this book and nice comments from a lot of the different band members (and there were a lot!).

In general, it is considered that the first 4 albums are the classic Spirt (Spirit, The Family that Plays Together, Clear and 12 Dreams of Dr Sardonicus). I have to admit, I am really only familiar with the last one, which is pretty cool. For most of the many albums in the Spirit discography, their has been a number of unreleased tracks, or versions, many of which have later appeared in box sets, compilations, reissues, etc. and all of this is described very well. At the end of the book Randy´s solo albums and Spirit live albums are discussed in separate sections.

Overall, this is very interesting and informative book about a pretty groundbreaking band when they came out and one that never really got huge recognition. An interesting read for sure..

http://sonicbondpublishing.com
Scott aka.
